Great Music from Ilayaraja ji...SPB is simply awsome..I admire him...Tamil film has eye to eye or more talent than Bollywood. I feel bolly industry is hyped a lot...talent is blown and shown, but reality is something else..tamil has given us a lot of soothing songs..we get energy when hearing this song..i am fom Kochi, but also hear tamil songs the most, esp, by Ilayaraja sir..I am affected by I1R1 virus...haha (aka; H1N1; Ilayaraja virus..:-))

@TheE59,
Tamil equivalent of pathram/ pathra (leaf) is 'Ithazh'
Tamil equivalent of pazham/ phalam is 'kani'.
Pure Tamil is not influenced by Sanskrit, and is older than Sanskrit. Probably among the living languages the oldest.

@nazrin4414,
Jai Ho is hype. Not bad, but not great. This song is a real classic beauty, and shows the creativity of the originator (Ilayaraja).

@goosedoodle
For all those Sanskrit-borrowed words Tamil has its equivalent. Anyway, borrowing from other languages makes any language richer and not poorer. That Tamil can assimilate words from other languages and still can maintain its individuality shows the flexibility and the greatness of Tamil, not otherwise.

@vikramvishnu,
That village is an artificial construct made just for the sake having such a village. it is not natural. The mother tongue of the people there is Kannada and not Sanskrit.
Anyway it is not a bad idea as it helps protect Sanskrit, a language that needs to be cherished and protected.

@goosedoodle I am sure you have never been introduced to Linguistics. For, nothing lvf1dipu have said is incorrect. I wonder what made you to put that ridiculous comment. I think it is irrelevant and incorrect to talk about the pride a person has for his language. I dont understand why YOU are so pissed of with Tamils being proud of Tamil Language.
Not that anything you say is worth taking to consideration, but that doesnt give you the right to comment like that.
Bad this happens in YouTube

@goosedoodle - Many ... ( 2 weeks ago by lvf1dipu)
@goosedoodle - Many of these words that you have mentioned is a new derivative or vernacular tamil.
The tamil world for night is Iravu and the vernacular word is derived from the sanskrit word Rathri and not Raat (Raat is a new world word)
The tamil word for Year is Aandu. If you know tamil the word for new year is Puth-Aandu. Puth is sanskrit is the word for hell and thus has no meaning here. The word for ducument is Chuvadi - The leaf is Olai-cchuvadi. Pathiram is again NWD. Malar is flower
@goosedoodle The ... ( 2 weeks ago by lvf1dipu)
@goosedoodle The word for night is iravu and the vernacular word Raathri is a direct lift from the sanskrit word RATHRI and not Raat. In sanskrit there is no word called Raat. only in hindi. The word for year is Aandu (Remember Puth-Aandu) the word Puth in sanskrit means Hell and has no meaning here. The word for flower is malar. The word for document is chuvadi. What you have told above are adopted words. Only cobras should show the hood not earth worms. I have tried to enlighten without bias.
@vinoa : Possible ... ( 2 weeks ago by lvf1dipu)
@vinoa : Possible vinoa. But the whole contention is that Tamil is an independent language and tamil evolved out of Tamil. But sanskrit on the other hand has derived out of Proto-Iranian language. The roots originated from old world mesopotamian language stream.Indo-European to Proto-Iranian to Indo-Aryan etc. Trust this helps !! :)
@vinoa : Also the ... ( 2 weeks ago by lvf1dipu)
@vinoa : Also the language that shares a greater part of sanskrit is Malayalam. More than what hindi shares.

@lvf1dipu Until about the ninth century, Malayalam was a dialect of Tamil. Freeman, Rich (February 1998), "Rubies and Coral: The Lapidary Crafting of Language in Kerala", The Journal of Asian Studies (Association for Asian Studies) 57 (1): 38–65, doi:10.2307/2659023
